🐝 Mosquito Bees of Kenya: The Tiny Stingless Heroes of Healing and Sustainability

🌍 What Are Mosquito Bees?
When most people think of bees, they imagine buzzing hives and painful stings - but not all bees sting. In Kenya’s tropical regions, a special kind of stingless bee known locally as the mosquito bee plays a quiet yet powerful role in pollination, medicine, and sustainable living.
These tiny bees belong to the Meliponini family and are affectionately called mosquito bees because of their tiny size and soft, mosquito-like hum. Despite their delicate appearance, they are essential pollinators for Kenya’s indigenous plants, wild fruits, and crops, helping preserve biodiversity and food security.

🌿 My Visit to Honeydom in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest
During my visit to Honeydom, a local stingless bee enterprise nestled within the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, I was warmly welcomed by Emmanuel, a passionate beekeeper and conservationist.
He introduced me to their innovative approach to meliponiculture - the art of keeping stingless bees. Instead of traditional wooden hives, Emmanuel and his team use thermos flasks to house the tiny mosquito bees.
At first, I was surprised. But as Emmanuel explained, the reason is ingenious: the bees create balloon-shaped wax chambers that are extremely delicate. These wax “balloons” hold honey and brood, and they can collapse if overheated or disturbed.
The thermos flasks provide the perfect insulated environment, keeping the hives cool, stable, and protected from predators. It’s a brilliant blend of traditional beekeeping knowledge and creative innovation - proof that sustainability often starts with local wisdom.
🍯 Healing Power of Mosquito Bee Honey
The honey produced by mosquito bees is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. It’s runny, tangy, and aromatic, with a flavour that captures the essence of the forest. Locally, it’s known as “medicinal honey” - and for good reason.
Emmanuel shared that this honey is widely used in the community for its healing and immune-boosting properties, helping treat:
-
Coughs and sore throats
-
Wounds and skin infections
-
Eye and ear ailments
-
Digestive and respiratory issues
Scientific studies have shown that stingless bee honey has higher antioxidant and antibacterial content than regular honey, making it a natural health booster.

💛 The Final Buzz
From the quiet groves of Arabuko Sokoke to the skilled hands of Emmanuel at Honeydom, mosquito bees show us that true strength lies in gentleness. Their stingless nature, pale wax, and medicinal honey remind us that nature’s smallest creatures often hold the greatest healing power.
By protecting them, we protect a vital link between Kenya’s people, forests, and future.
